Weather & Traffic Models

The combination of high resolution weather data and traffic data can improve traffic flow and safety

Project description

Relations between weather and traffic look evident. Heavy precipitation during the late afternoon ? Traffic congestion during the rush hour. However to quantify the relations between weather and traffic is until now quite difficult. New Big Datasets like floating car data and detailed traffic flow measurements by a.o. the department of public works in combination with high-resolution weather data can provide new opportunities for quantitative analysis and prediction.

In cooperation with the national data warehouse for traffic information (NDW), the national scientific institute for road safety research in the Netherlands (SWOV) and TUDelft-DiTTLlab, we explore the possibilities to combine our data to ultimately develop a weather dependent predicting model of traffic flow to be used for road management and safety improvement.
